CHOIR PRACTICE

WHEN: EVERY WEDNESDAY
TIME: 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
WHERE: CHURCH PROPER
PERIOD: ALL YEAR

A Choir is a group of musically qualified members assisting at the Divine Liturgy and at other services within the Church. Originally, the choirs were monophonic, that is, all singers sang the same notes at the same time. There is evidence that choirs of this nature were singing in Church as early as the 4th century, although the music they were rendering was not identical in all places, especially in places far apart geographically and of diverse culture, language, and ecclesiastical tradition. Byzantine music developed gradually in the Eastern Orthodox Church. By the 15th century in the Eastern Orthodox Church the original plain chant became choral, although it remained practically monophonic as a result of musical influences from the peoples of the East comprising the Byzantine empire.

Our Choir sings during the Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings. Our Choir also sings at various other services throughout the Ecclesiastical year. The choir sings in both Greek and English and no previous choral experience is necessary. Attendance at Choir practice is necessary. Anyone interested in joining the Choir is welcome to attend practice. For more information contact either Fr. Dean or our Choir Director, Virginia Headley.
